John Engler

John M. Engler is a member of the Citizens Advisory Group.

John M. Engler became president and CEO of the National Association of Manufacturers on October 1, 2004. The largest industry trade group in America, NAM represents small and large manufacturers in every industrial sector and in all 50 states. Between 1991 and 2003, Mr. Engler was a three-term governor of Michigan, where his top priority was improving education. During his time in office, he turned a $1.8 billion state budget deficit and into a $1.2 billion surplus, created the Department of Environmental Quality, strengthened the Department of Natural Resources, and elevated to cabinet level status the Office of the Great Lakes. Prior to becoming governor, Mr. Engler served for 20 years in the state legislature, including seven as state Senate majority leader. He graduated from Michigan State University and later earned a law degree from MSU's Thomas M. Cooley Law School. He serves on the boards of Northwest Airlines and Universal Forest Products and is a past chairman of the National Governors Association.
