Peter Berns is executive director of the Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations and chief executive officer of its Standards for Excellence Institute, which promotes the highest standards of ethics and accountability for nonprofits. Under Mr. Berns' leadership, Maryland Nonprofits has grown to become one of the nation's largest and most successful state associations of nonprofit organizations, and he has been instrumental in the creation and replication of the Standards for Excellence program. An attorney by profession, Mr. Berns has a long history of community service. He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania, a law degree from Harvard University, and an LL.M. in advocacy from Georgetown University Law Center.
