John E. Marshall, III, is president and CEO of The Kresge Foundation, an independent private foundation located in Troy, Michigan. Prior to joining Kresge in 1979, he served as executive director of the Rhode Island Foundation, associate director of development at Brown University, and advertising manager for U.N. Alloy Steel Corporation. Mr. Marshall serves on the boards of United Way Community Services, Greater Downtown Partnership, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Detroit 300 Conservancy Endowment, City Year Detroit, and New Detroit. Previously, Mr. Marshall served as chair of the Council of Michigan Foundations, board member of Schools of the 21st Century, trustee of the Council on Foundations, secretary of INDEPENDENT SECTOR, director and vice chair of Family Service of Detroit and Wayne County, chair of Michigan Community Foundations' Youth Project, trustee of Michigan Nonprofit Forum, and founding member of Michigan Campus Compact. He is an alumnus of Brown University.
