Harvey J. Berger is the partner-in-charge of not-for-profit tax services for the accounting firm of Grant Thornton LLP, based in Vienna, Virginia. An advisor to Grant Thornton professionals across the country on tax issues affecting exempt organizations, Mr. Berger has served in the firm's Washington, D.C., area offices for more than 35 years. He writes a monthly column on tax issues for The NonProfit Times and is a frequent speaker on tax aspects of exempt organizations. A certified public accountant in Maryland, DC, and Virginia and a member of the Maryland and District of Columbia Bars, Mr. Berger is chair of the Exempt Organizations Tax Technical Resource Panel of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He received a law degree from the University of Maryland School of Law and a bachelor's degree in accounting from Johns Hopkins University.
